Techniques to use

When flyfishing for Smallmouth Yellows the most successful methods are the use of nymphing or Czech nymphing techniques. Casting well weighted files in all the lies that are likely to be holding fish will ensure that you hook into a hard fighting Smallmouth Yellow.

     

Weighted Caddis and mayfly nymphs in sizes 10 to 16 are the most commonly used and should be tied in various colors. During mid August to the end of October and again during mid March to the end of April, water clarity is at its best for fishing with dry flies. This allows for some very exciting fishing.

            

 

The approach

They feed right on the bottom of the river due to the abundance of food in the structure. They hide under currents, near the bottom of deep pools and amongst structure.
