SMALLMOUTH YELLOWFISH

Seasons

We mostly flyfish for Smallmouth during the warmer months of the year (August  - April) As they spend most of the winter months in the deeper water of the river and are relatively dormant and more difficult to catch.

When the water temperature reaches 18-20 ēC (65 F) they will start actively feeding in preparation for spawning. Spawning occurs during mid summer depending on various factors including water levels, weather conditions and the availability of food.

Fishing statistics

Smallmouth Yellowfish stay and feed in the rapids until the onset of winter around late April to May, when they will move out of the shallower water and into the deeper sections of the river. Water clarity is not really an issue but visibility of 15cm (6”) and better is commonly preferred.

Smallmouth Yellowfish can be caught throughout the day although certain times of the day are more productive. It is commonly believed that Smallmouth only start feeding during mid morning with peak feeding time at sunset.

Exciting catches can be made by fishing emerging caddis and large caddis adults after sunset and even sometimes after the onset of total darkness.

Equipment
The recommended flyfishing tackle for pursuing Smallmouth Yellowfish will be an 8’6” or 9ft rod in the 5-6 weight category.  A matching floating line and leader of around 9’ or even longer should be used when targeting Smallmouth.

During early spring and late autumn when the water is exceptionally clear, it might be necessary to use a longer leader when fishing dry flies. Tippet material from 4 – 8 lb. will be recommended when targeting Smallmouth Yellows.

When booking an Adventure Flyfishing getaway you will receive a list of personal necessities. Although we provide boating equipment, fishing rods, reels, lines, flies and wading sticks you are most welcome to bring your own fishing tackle.
