LARGEMOUTH YELLOWFISH

Techniques to use

Flyfishing for Largemouth Yellowfish is normally done from portable inflatable boats or by casting from river banks. Casting is aimed at underwater structure, rocky  outcrops, reeds, overhanging trees and drop-offs. The takes are normally aggressive and result in a blinding fast dash for cover.

The approach

Largemouth Yellowfish are piscavorous and the true hunters of the Orange and Vaalriver systems. Their main food source consist of small baitfish and freshwater crabs but they will also utilize various other food sources like Dragonflies, Damsels and freshwater shrimp. Largemouth are very habitat specific and territorial to a great extent. They frequent the deeper water around structure from where they will ambush their prey.
